Community outreach programme and monthly dinner
This month our monthly community outreach programme was in Phuket! Our assignment was to help clean and redecorate the main office and the safe house for the Asia Foundation.
The Asia Foundation helps to protect, look after and develop children at risk from abuse, poverty and a life of no education.
We were separated into two teams, my team was working at the safe house. This is a place where 9 young children live to be cared for by thai house parents. They are here to get away from exposure to alcohol abuse, physical abuse, unsound home life or other reasons beyond the control of their parents.
We were assigned the task of clearing, clearing, fixing and painting the back yard. We had to dig up the floor getting it ready for new grass, cleaning the pond so the new filtering system could be installed, smoothing the walls and repainting them, painting a mural and repairing the green netting which covered the top of the garden.
Apart from finding two scorpions, being bitten by a gazzilion pissed off ants, one of the volunteers breaking the outside roof, flooding the ground and marieke ending up with a mini hole in her head, the project went quite well!
It's a shame the grass didn't arrive so we could see the finished article but the walls looked amazing, the pond was emptied, cleaned and refilled with a clever procession line and all weeds removed.
In short it was a very hard, nackering, rewarding day :) Can't wait to hear the kids feedback! Just hope they like it!!
When we had finished the project we all headed off to have a shower, we were pretty disgusting and I needed to remove my war paint... What?! There was so much paint and no one else was doing it! When we looked slightly more humane we headed out for our monthly dinner... Sushi!!!
It was an all you can eat buffet which was fricken awesome!! Sushi and other japanese foods EVERYWHERE!!!! Me and Gabby got through around 4 courses between us which meant I had to roll home... Worth it though!!
Seeing as I only have a week left and V and Gai both have 2 weeks holiday off (selfish) it meant I had to say goodbye to the two party members of the PA staff :( they've been fricken awesome and I dare ANYONE to try and win a dance off with Gai... She will kick yo aaaass!!
